Introduction to wood carving

Wood carving is a kind of sculpture, which is often called "folk craft" in our country. Wood carvings can be divided into three categories: three-dimensional round carvings, root carvings and relief carvings. Wood carving is a kind of work separated from carpentry, which is classified as "fine carpentry" in our country.
Folk art varieties classified by carving materials. Generally, the tree species with fine and tough texture and not easy to deform are selected, such as nanmu, red sandalwood, camphor, cypress, gingko, aloes, mahogany, longan, etc.
The art of tree root carving in natural form is "tree root carving".
Wood carving has round carving, relief carving, carving or several techniques used together. Some are also painted to protect wood and beautify it.
On june7,2008, wood carvings were listed in the second batch of national intangible cultural heritage list with the approval of the State Council.
On may23,2011, the wood carving declared by Putian City, Fujian Province (Putian wood carving) was approved by the State Council of the people's Republic of China to be included in the third batch of national intangible cultural heritage list.
According to the introduction of the public service platform of the national arts and crafts industry, Chinese traditional wood carving has a wide range of materials and rich carving themes. According to different materials, it can be divided into mahogany carving, white wood carving, boxwood carving and longan carving.
